¹Satchel Paige (1906–1982) was a pitcher for the Cleveland Indians and later the St. Louis Browns. He was brought to the major leagues by Bill Veeck after a long and spectacular career in the Negro leagues. Some measure of his skill can be gained from realizing that Paige pitched in the major leagues after his 50th birthday. He was the first player from the Negro leagues inducted into the National Baseball Hall of Fame.
